Still... Life
The human experience is at once both personal and universal. We carry with us memories of places and experiences that form the essence of who we are. Through the realization of common experience and understanding, we become conscious of our common humanity. Visual images have the power to evoke memory and psychological responses that tie us to the world. The act of painting calls for attentiveness to what is often overlooked, a process that demands an intimacy with the subject. I am captivated by light describing form and the transformative effect it has on everyday subjects.
Much of my work focuses on domesticity, the everyday spaces and objects that surround us. The inherent paradoxes that exist within this realm can evoke various emotional states which I aim to explore. Through my paintings I seek to open a space for contemplation and self-reflection.

Marlene's art can now be found in over 500 private, corporate and public collections in Canada, United States, England and Switzerland. Ten of her paintings and 6 photographs were selected to be part of the decor of the "Get Wired" Feature Home for the Toronto National Home Show in 2008. As well, her work is frequently featured on the decorating television show, "Love It or List It". Marlene is thrilled to be showing her work at beautiful Arts on Queen with her current exhibit, running for the month of May, 2012, entitled 'Look Up, Look Way Up'.
